Welcome to WasteMan – The Movie!

Welcome to WasteMan – The Movie! The blog that aims to keep you posted on the journey of a WasteMan called Darren Thompson*, from conception, to production and everything in between.

The term ‘WasteMan’ means many things to many different people. The one thing that is common amongst all users of the word is that it’s a universal derogatory label. You are unlikely to hear a woman say to her boyfriend “You’re such a WasteMan!” followed by him smiling and viewing it as a term of endearment! LOL

People often wonder if the poem is about an ex of mine (it isn’t), and ask how it came about, so I’ll explain….WasteMan is a term I’d heard used frequently, in lots of random places; while walking down the street, sitting on public transport and in chat rooms and online blogs. The phrase is bandied about as the ultimate cuss word. I discovered a particular Social Networking site had a group dedicated to the WasteMan, with a number of women using it as a sounding board to express their disgust at many a mans behaviour. As well as your average WasteMan ‘on road’, apparently there are numerous male celebrities who also fit the mould with MC Harvey, Peter Doherty, Eddie Murphy and Kevin Federline all cited as WasteMen for various reasons; namely drug abuse, child neglect, womanising and general shameless behaviour. It was reading these ramblings that inspired the original poem which has gone on to cause mixed reactions amongst audiences at shows for the past 18 months.

Women generally find the poem funny, but some men are a little less tickled pink when they hear lyrics depicting what they may feel, is a touch too close to their own heart!

WasteMan was only ever intended to be a humorous account of one man’s treacherous, irresponsible, farcical lifestyle, and as I say to everyone at the end of a performance: if it offended you, you need to check yourself!

It’s been emotional… stay tuned for the next instalment.

Bless, Comfort

  1. I like the idea of making poem into a short film as poetry is storytelling, and I believe that poetry can be expressed in a number of ways, So keep up the good work and cannot wait to see the finished product
